Setting Up Control Center

Control Center is a menu for quick access to functions you use the most, such as the camera, flashlight, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Before learning how to set up screen recording with sound on iPhone, ensure that the screen recording icon is in the Control Center.

If your iPhone has a button below the screen, swipe up from the bottom edge. If you have an iPhone X or newer, swipe down from the top-right corner. The screen recording icon looks like a dot inside a circle.

If the screen recording button isn’t there, you’ll need to check which iOS version is installed. Apple regularly releases updates, with the latest arriving in September 2024, and the process for setting up Control Center has changed. You can update to iOS 18 if you have an iPhone 10-16 series.

To verify if you need a new OS, go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, your phone will prompt you. To find your iOS version, go to Settings > General > About.

On New Models (iOS 18)

  2. Tap the “+” at the top-left. Alternatively, press and hold an empty space until elements highlight and start flashing.
  3. Choose Add Control at the bottom of the display.
  4. Find Screen Recording. The Control Search bar at the top of the display may help locate it.
  5. To remove the screen recording button, repeat steps 1 and 2 and tap the “-” next to its icon.

Additional Features: Editing the Recording

How to Edit Your Screen Recording on iPhone

Not only can you record your iPhone screen without additional software (if it’s newer than iPhone 5), but you can also use built-in editing tools. Though limited, the advantage is that you don’t need to transfer the video to a computer or download extra apps. You can trim the start or end of the video, where you began or stopped recording.

  1. Open the Library in the Photos app and select your video.
  2. Choose Edit in the top-right corner. In iOS 18, tap the icon with three bars in the bottom menu of three icons at the center.
  3. At the bottom, you’ll see a frame-by-frame timeline. To trim the start, drag the arrow next to the play button to the right. It should turn yellow. Drag the second arrow to the left to trim the end.
  4. Tap the play button to view your edited video. Adjust the arrows until you achieve the desired result.
  5. You can also apply filters in the bottom menu, making your video brighter, more contrasty, black-and-white, or adjusting the tone.
  6. When your video is ready, tap Done > Save Video or Save Video as New Clip.

How Long Can the Video Be?

Fortunately, Apple doesn’t limit the length of iPhone screen recordings. It depends on your remaining battery life and storage space (videos take up a fair amount of space). Check these in advance to avoid losing a lengthy recording due to a full memory or a drained battery.
